On March 13th I was officially one week late. At this point I was emotionally and physically tapped out. I wanted Maya to come into this world and I wanted it to be sooner than later. At this point I had not wanted to speak with a single person about why Maya hadn’t come yet, when she was going to come…blah blah blah. I was done.
My doctors appointment was at 4pm. He decided to put a Foley catheter in to help dilate my cervix. My contractions started right away. We started timing them and they were consistently 5 minutes apart for about 60 seconds. They started out pretty intense and never tapered off. I’d planned on having a glass of wine and DJ and I having a nice night together as just the two of us but it didn’t go as planned. The contractions were so intense I that I could not speak when I was having one. I labored all night long. I tried getting into the bathtub and that felt awful, I tried laying different ways and that didn’t work. So I just laid next to DJ and he coached me through it. I wanted him to get rest though since there it was going to be a long time until he could rest again.
We were told by the doctor that to check in with the hospital the next morning to make sure there was going to be room for us. DJ woke up at 5:30 and called and there was room. That’s when it set in that we were going to have our baby that day. I think it was about that that same moment when I asked DJ to get me a pot or something because I was going to throw up. I threw up, put my sweats on and waddled to the car, stopping right before getting to the car to have a contraction. DJ was already such a good Daddy he had all of our bags packed and ready to go. We were on our way…..
We checked into the hospital at around 7 am. We had to wait a little while before getting into the room. Once we were in and settled is when the fun began. I have horrible veins so the poor nurse trainee had a hard time finding my vein. I ended up all bruised after the process. Dr. Morell came in at around 7:30 to break my water and the nurses hooked me up to receive some Pitocin. I told the nurses that my contractions were really intense but they didn’t believe me because the monitor was not reading my contractions. They ended up putting and internal monitor inside of me and that’s when they realized that I was indeed having strong contractions. When I checked into the hospital I was at about 3 centimeters and by 10am I was over 5 centimeters. It was around then that I asked for my epidural. It took awhile to get the medication right because I kept feeling numb on one side of my body and not the other.
After the epidural was in effect DJ went to go get some coffee and I calmly chatted with my sisters and mom. My contractions were starting to come at a faster pace so the nurse decided to check me at around 11:30 am. I was at 9+ centimeters and was ready to push. DJ came back into the room and I told him the news. Everyone was a little shocked that I had gone from 5cm to 9cm in about an hour. At around noon I started the process of pushing.
I pushed for 3 hours and our beautiful baby girl was born at 2:56pm. I had the best coaches in the entire world. My mom and DJ were in there by my side for the whole process. My mom counted for me and DJ rooted me on. I had my own cheering section right there with me. In the end I had to have an episiotomy because Maya didn’t want to come out. Dr. Morell had to use a vacuum to help her out as well. It was the most amazing thing that I have ever done. March 14th was by far the best day of my entire life.
I could not have done it without my Mom and DJ though. They stood by me and coached me through the entire process. Women are so lucky to have the option of experiencing childbirth. 23 hours of labor and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
That evening is something I will never forget. After all of the hustle and bustle of the day had ended and it was just me, DJ and Maya I felt this overwhelming feeling of contentment. My life felt complete. DJ laid down on the day bed next to me and I held our little girl under the dim hospital lights. She slept right next to me all night just nursing and sleeping.
I am a Mom, I have a beautiful little girl, a wonderfully supportive loving Man and I couldn’t be happier.
